Tuesday
The group had an early start to their day and in high expectations for the delivery of the container that has all the rainbow material that we would need for the project.
After breakfast the
working team had a good start on the foundation work. They had to dig on the
very rocky ground. While we were working some of our members of the group had
to visit the principal of the school In metzgav. Here is their report:
A group of five participants met the principal of this school. He gave
us a bit of history about the school. It was established in 1998 and is one of
only 4 bilingual schools in Israel. The total number of students in these four
schools is 1144 and at Galil there are 170 students. Each class room has two
“home teachers,” one who is of Arabic heritage or decent, and the other who is
of Jewish decent or heritage. Exams are written in both Hebrew and Arabic. The
students study religious education, maths, ,Israeli and Palestinian history together. The
students are only separated during their language classes. The school observes
and celebrates all religious days on the calendar and also teach about the
national holidays. This is because the school believes that ethnic identities
should be strengthened and the history of these identities taught instead of
trying to create a new identity. The curriculum is the same as every other
school but with extra emphasis on intergrational activities that highlight the
different religious and ethnic identities. The schools work is supported by the
ministry of education an various NGOs. This is in itself a sign of hope
especially the support from a government department. Teachers at the school are
represented by either one of two a teachers unions Teaching methods are
constantly improved in the interest of quality education . The meeting was
ended by the participants inviting the principle to the opening of the rainbow
along with all the students .
After the group had a good lunch prepared by the kitchen group they had a break, some of them went to swim and others took a nap.
At 4:00 pm the groups went back to work again. After dinner the container arrived and everyone was so happy and relieved that it was finally here and that they could start with the constriction of the rainbow. That was a very good gift for Klous who was celebrating his birthday on the same day.
The group ended the night with songs and a new favourite game introduced by Aadi, a game we would play every night.
